Damb and the Miani Hor – Lagoon, Beaches, Dunes and Mangroves

The town of Damb, located at a two-hour drive from Karachi serves as the entry point to the Miani Hor lagoon via boat. The waters of the lagoon are fed my collected seawater that enters it from its mouth while the other three sides are bordered by the sandy coast and the landing jetty of Damb.

Damb itself is accessed by a 20-minute detour from the N25 highway that runs from Karachi to Quetta. The connecting road to Damb is metalled and lies to the left of the N25. The town itself hosts a decent population with a few stores and existing boat ride facilities run by locals for visitors. Much of the population of this particular area are either directly involved with fishing or boat-making, which is also carried out here.

Native Fishing Boats

Over time, the Miani lagoon has inundated land closer to Damb as water levels have risen around this part of the coast. This is why the natural mangrove barrier existing here is vital for coastal protection, water erosion and to maintain a healthy population of marine life in the surrounding waters. During a time of high tide or a tropical storm, the mangrove absorbs a majority of the impact, keeping the coastal land areas behind it sheltered from potential damage.

Given its mangrove cover and the health of the blue lagoon waters, there is an abundance of fish, shrimps, and prawns. However, the most notable of the marine life here are the groups of dolphins that call the lagoon home. In addition, the winters welcome significant numbers of migratory Siberian birds which are in search of relatively warmer waters compared to their origins of Siberia in the Russian north.

The beaches that border the lagoon waters are some of the cleanest, untouched stretches of fine, yellow sand. Some of the stretches of beach are backed by the most gorgeous rolling sand dunes which add to the incredible diversity in terrain that this area possesses. All in all, the light blue waters, diverse marine life, mangrove forests, sandy clean beaches, and the sand dunes make up for a stunning landscape, to say the least.
